“My Appointment with Katrina at 9:11” is a play on words and images. From the title, it could simply mean having a normal appointment or date with a beautiful woman name Katrina for a wonderful dinner at 9:11 PM. However, the real story is different and the facts that are in my design are not like any pleasant appointment at Champs Elysee in Paris. Unfortunately, it has a totally different connotation and reality. I guess Mother Nature is truly angry with us. That’s why we can recognize that lately she is expressing herself and her anger toward us again and again. It seems to me that she is warning us in different ways to move us again in the right direction in life. Storms, tornados, hurricanes, wildfires and other natural disasters show us this.
Thinking well for a moment in the depth of our heart, we realize that she is right, because she provided everything for us. For instance, she created enough water and land, fauna and beautiful flora for us to be able to feed ourselves forever. So, I am asking at this point, what is wrong with us anyway? And why? Why are we so greedy and never satisfied and happy?
On the other hand, I ask myself after the great warning and tragedy of September eleventh, why don’t we pay more attention to such big disasters, and learn from them for the rest of our lives? We know that Hurricane Katrina in reality was another angry warning of Mother Nature. It warned humanity and should have made us realize that the perpetual actions of mankind have drastically altered the environment, resulting in different disasters such as a devastating flood, or a mind-boggling tragedy such as nine-eleven, that uselessly killed so many innocent brothers and sister of ours. These are all man-made.
Of course, to our “enemies”, if we can call them that, probably the twin towers represented one of the centers of greed and corruption, of economic injustice and one-sided financial benefit structure of our society. They were a center of money, power and wealth. While the destruction and annihilation cannot be condoned, the fact remains that the same greed and corruption is the starting point to change our natural thoughts, behavior and roles in society, and our political environment as well. Yet somehow some of us still choose the wrong path in life, rather than the natural and correct trail to learn the lesson that she always constantly taught us from the very beginning. The devastation and destruction of Katrina and nine-eleven should be a grand lesson to all of us, and a warning that, “Hey, my dear children, you are going in the wrong direction from that which I have always been teaching you. Alas, you are not listening to me anymore. I guess you got totally deaf. You just wrongly believe that you found the pathway to righteousness, balance and truth. But regrettably you are all wrong. You don’t listen to me. You decide and act arbitrary and alone, thinking that you learned and know everything.”
In my drawing, the first things one sees at the top left of my design are the representation of the two beautiful twin towers in flames. ….I did not try to exaggerate by showing everything graphically like many people jumping down. I am sure it is not a nice scene to watch any destruction again and again. There, in my drawings are just a few hints of some innocent human beings falling from the burning hell of the two tall buildings or drowning in the tempestuous waters of dear “Miss Katrina”.… we see lots of women in black robes carrying candles, praying, appreciating and looking and probably admiring the eye of Mother Nature. Perhaps they are black angels, but they have pearly hearts. I do not know, maybe. At this point I also am confused, because the importance of this scene is that one of the women is pregnant and carrying a new and yet unborn child within her womb, which is the sign of continuation of our lives, and it reminds us of different stages of our lives. When we are young, we are pure and somehow very innocent….Then of course at the end, there is death and in my point of view, the transformation of material, peacefulness and definitely just serenity. I guess by this act, I made the Mother Nature very happy by this very tiny fetus. I really hope so. (More description is available).
